In Japan, paulownia wood has long been cherished as a material for protecting valuable items—from tea chests and furniture to shelves for storing kimono.
Lightweight, highly moisture-regulating (able to absorb and release humidity), and naturally insect-resistant, paulownia has been regarded as an ideal wood for safeguarding what is precious.
Beginning in the Nara period (710–784), tea chests made of paulownia were used to transport tea leaves, evolving alongside tea culture through the hands of nobles and samurai. Over time, the exceptional qualities of this wood elevated tea chests not only as storage vessels but also as refined objects of beauty.
At Your Tea, we have reinterpreted this heritage by incorporating the ancient Dogū—figures symbolizing fertility and prosperity for nearly 16,000 years—into our design concept.
DOGU MAM was created to transform tea from a mere ritual into a deeply internal, sensory experience.
